In the eighteenth century, the collection consisted of several works inherited from the first county museum, established in 1794. These were revolutionary confiscations, stored in an annex to the library. In 1861, Charles Picot bequeathed to the city of Chalons his collection of 575 paintings and works of art: it is the true birth of the municipal museum.
