Commanderie de La Couvertoirade

12230 LA COUVERTOIRADE

While the village has long existed, the Commandery of the Couvertoirade was founded in 1181 after receiving a gift of a mas lords of Richard and Montpaon Brenguier of Molnar.
In 1249, the Templars of St. Eulalie built a castle, a chapel, and fortified the village. Shortly after 1307, the Templars were arrested and imprisoned in the castle of Najac, their property confiscated.

The Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem received the command post following the dissolution of the Order of the Temple. They built fortifications to protect the thirty families who lived in the village.
