The castle is located on a Rochebaron juice crystalline 653 meters. The location is naturally defended by ravines, especially in the east where it dominates the Loire over 200 meters. The castle also had a privileged position in history, the borders of Forez and Velay.

Rochebaron successively belonged to six families: Rochebaron (940-1434), of Chalencon (1434-1618), snakes (1618-1650), de la Rochefoucauld (1650-1766), of Fisicat (1766-1775). Since the mid-seventeenth century, the castle was more or less maintained and lived in a manner episodic.
We can cite the exact date of construction of the castle, it has undergone many changes through the ages. The oldest part dates from the twelfth century (tour round the north).

The castle is built mainly of arkose, granite and bricks (some would be recovery from the Roman period: Roman colony Bassus).
