Château de Beaufort

43150 GOUDET

This castle was built around 1200 and was besieged several times, notably by the English during the Hundred Years War. He had great military importance at that time and during the wars of religion. Property of the Lords of Beaufort, it is situated on the banks of the Loire and the stream of Fouragette. It stands on a rock commanding the four valleys. Thus, all the avenues of Goudet were under its control.

The castle with a square plan house on the south side of the court Antoine de la Tour said in the sixteenth century a large horseshoe turn to the southwest corner, a tower at the northwest corner, a false bray with corner tower. The tower was strengthened internally by a wall lining and perforated with loopholes and gunboats.

Now called Castle Goudet, this building was called the castle of Beaufort until the revolution.

A lady of Beaufort still lives in the eighteenth century this house became ruined in the early nineteenth century.

The fortress is protected by a wall partly rebuilt in the fifteenth century. Inside the enclosure, not rise to the sky a few crumbling walls to door leaving, however, appear in part the plan of the building. Northeast, remains of a vaulted room and a fireplace. Again, like those of the monastery church, the ruins of the castle come not from revolutionary fury hungry for destruction but by the greed of people wishing to take advantage of materials, stone preferably for new constructions . One can still see a tank that ignorance called the name of oblivion.

From 2000 to 2005, the workshops Chanteloube benefited from the consolidation of the existing parties to establish a permanent site of the medieval building with a mural workshop, a stone carving workshop, a carpentry workshop and a workshop with the crane masonry Medieval called squirrel cage. Some non-permanent workshops were also held.

To date (2008), the site has become private property and there is no animation takes place.
