At the top of the rock of the Grotto, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was built from 1866 to 1871, both of Hippolyte Durand. It was blessed and inaugurated August 15, 1871 by Bishop Pichenot, Bishop of Tarbes and future bishop of Chambéry. It was erected in minor basilica by Pope Pius IX March 13, 1874. On the front, the top inset represents Pius X. Face illuminated by a smile, he holds in his left hand the decree dated November 13, 1907, by which the feast of the Apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes is extended to the universal Church.
The inset at the bottom, above the entrance to the Crypt, represents Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854.
