Through the work of Dom Gueranger that restores the Benedictine order in France, the former priory of Saint-Pierre, founded in 1010, became an abbey in 1837. It will be important architectural works: expansion of the abbey in 1860, construction of the wing on the Sarthe in 1896 by Don Mellet-inspired both of Mont-Saint-Michel and the Palais Popes of Avignon - and another in 1956. In the transept of the abbey, are kept one of the most important groups of sculpture of the late fifteenth century and the mid-sixteenth century, called the Saints of Solesmes.
In the shadow of St. Peter's Abbey, the abbey of women, St. Cecilia, was founded shortly after. Also a victim of its success, it must grow. The architect P. Truth extend, from 1881, the neo-Gothic cloister in closed.
