The Abbey of Piety, God of the shoulder, founded by Queen Berengaria of Navarre in 1229, is one of the last Cistercian foundation in France. Based on a literature promoting architectural meditation and elevation of mind, its construction is the perfect model of the spiritual quest.
The sovereign lady of Le Mans is within these walls, so close to the city she loved so much. Her husband, Richard, is the Royal Abbey of Fontevrault. Current ownership of the General Council of Sarthe, the Abbey of the shoulder is open to visitors daily, temporary exhibitions and concerts.
